2012 – A Year In Review

How is it possible another year has gone by? I am mind blown at how quickly this Christmas has gone by and now it’s New Year’s Eve again. Wow. It’s been a great year – but I will say there have probably been more ups and downs this year then ever. If I could sum it up in one word – BUSY! If I could change one thing about this year it would be to slow down, not that I didn’t enjoy every moment but it would have been nice to breathe once in a while. : ) With that being said lets take a trip down memory lane and look at some of my favourite moments and review the resolutions I made last year

Crossing the finish line at the Tely 10 – this was a huge goal of mine for many years and I am so glad I finally did it!

Our trip to Florida and Cruise around the Eastern Caribbean – probably the only time this year I was semi-relaxed. haha

Turning 26 years old – I am officially over half way through my 20’s. But it sure was a great birthday!

Best party I threw all year – Bruce’s 30th Birthday “A Roaring 20’s Gala”. I put so much into this party and it was a BLAST!

Aside from finishing the Tely, the Run for Freedom 8K was also another race I loved.

One of the best meals I had all summer was the Lighthouse picnic – we actually did something touristy at home for once and I really enjoyed it.

Passed my NKE for my Canadian Human Resources Professional designation! YAY!

Got into graduate school! : )

Fell in love with hot yoga….it was one of the few times this year I was able to relax and breathe.

Like I said it was a whirlwind of a year! Now lets review my resolutions I set last year:

1. Run a half-marathon – Not Achieved.

The longest distance I achieved this year was the Tely 10 and I pushed through that injured. After the Tely I tried unsuccessfully to keep it up but my injury was too far gone at this point and I stopped running on Aug 26. I made some changes and did a whole lot of physio and got the okay to run again on Dec 9. It’s been a long road but I am happy to say I am feeling great now and hope to achieve this goal in 2013.

2. Guest blog – Not Achieved.

I was a slacker this year on my blog! I had lots of guest bloggers myself but never took the initiative to guest blog for someone else. I hope to continue blogging more in 2013 but I know I will never be a daily poster. I just need to develop some consistency! 🙂

3. Heal my IT band fully – Achieved.

I put in a lot of work to get my back and legs healed this year. I learned to love my foam roller and strength training and I am happy to say my IT bands benefited from it!

4. Have a professional sneaker fitting – Achieved.

This was something I am so glad I did and encourage every runner to do! I love my asics and just ordered another pair a few days ago.

5. PR in the 5k – Not achieved.

I am running a 5k at 5pm this evening – my last race of 2012, the Resolution Run! That being said I am not expecting to PR due to the fact that I only started running again 3 weeks ago. My goal this evening is to have fun and run with friends. This is the only 5K I signed up for this year, 2012 was the year of the injury(s). I am hoping this race kicks off a great year of running for 2013.

6. Get my own blog domain that doesn’t end in .wordpress – Not Achieved.

Not achieved but working on it – will hopefully happen next year.

7. Organize and clean out my office – Achieved.

This lifted a lot of mental weight off my shoulders to get this accomplished before starting school next week. I can’t work in clutter and now everything is organized.

8. Go meatless once a week – Achieved.

I didn’t keep a record but I think I accomplished this for sure and hope to continue it into 2013. I really feel like taking meat out of my diet once a week is great for my health and I also have some other nutrition changes I’d like to make in 2013.

9. Try a new fitness class – Achieved.

Spinning and hot yoga – both of which I am now in love with!

10. Attend at least one professional development event – Achieved.

I attended several and became a CHRP candidate. In professional development this year, I kicked ass.

11. Run 1000 miles – Not Achieved.

After today’s race I will have run 395 miles. If you include elliptical miles then I did a total of 691 miles. Given my injuries and having to take over 3 months off, Ill take it.

I achieved over half my resolutions which I think is pretty good! I have a lot more goals I want to accomplish next year. I know 2013 will be a great year, I cannot wait to see what it has in store for me. I hope YOU have an amazing New Years and spend it with those you love. Happy Holidays and Happy New Years and I wish you all the best in 2013. 🙂

Did you accomplish all your goals in 2012?

What are your resolutions for 2013?

New Years Eve 2011

Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Years Eve! We started our night by having the most amazing meal at The Cellar.

I started with the best Cesar salad I have ever tasted and a glass of Italian Pinot Grigio. The second course was duck, jasmine rice, and a spring roll. It was my first time trying duck and it was actually pretty good. The third course was beef tenderloin, rosti potatoes, asparagus, and mushrooms. The beef was absolute perfection and I have never tasted a mushroom so good. I apologize for the low lighting shot!

For dessert they made me a fruit cup as every other dessert had dairy in it. They sugar coated the bananas and it was pretty good as far as fruit cups go! I would most definitely eat there again we left stuffed! After dinner we went back to Bruce’s sisters for drinks and fireworks and later in the night more food. The view of fireworks from their deck was spectacular, you could see the whole city. It was such a great way to ring in 2012.

This was the best New Years I have had in a long time, a great way to start 2012! Now it’s time to get cracking on my resolutions!

How did you celebrate New Years?

What do you hope to accomplish in 2012?

2012 Resolutions

I love setting goals, bet you didn’t know that about me! Anyways here is a list of goals I hope to accomplish in 2012. I already have my 25 for 25 but I figured I’d do a few New Year’s ones as well. On a side note, this is my final post for 2011 – number 111! It was too much of a coincidence not to be mentioned! haha

1. Run a half-marathon: There I finally said (wrote) it out loud. A half-marathon is no 5k or 10k, it requires a whole new level of commitment but I have done my research and think I am ready to take it on. Some people are able to jump into high mileage races, I prefer to be fully prepared. haha Now that I have conquered the 5K and 10K, next goal is 10 miles in July running the Tely 10 and a fall half-marathon is my major running goal for next year. Plus a few other races I am sure, first on my plan is a 5K in April.

2. Guest blog: I would love to be guest blogger on someone else’s blog. Smile

3. Heal my IT band fully: It’s not 100% yet and it needs to be by April…I have been a slacker with my physio exercises so I need to get back at it!

4. Have a professional sneaker fitting: I am hoping this will help with number 3 and also prevent future injuries. This needs to be done soon as I am creeping close to the 500 mile mark on my current shoes.

5. PR in the 5k

6. Get my own blog domain that doesn’t end in .wordpress

7. Organize and clean out my office: I can’t even explain how badly this is needed. haha

8. Go meatless once a week: I don’t want to attach a day to this … as much as I love the idea of meatless Monday I know it won’t always happen on Monday and I like goals that I am able to accomplish. I plan to mostly accomplish this with the help of Mama Pea’s recipeas! Smile This was a goal I actually stole from Runner’s World, I’ll never be a vegetarian but I can do it one a week!

9. Try a new fitness class: Haven’t decided which one yet. Suggestions?

10. Attend at least one professional development event

11. Run 1000 miles: I ran 429 miles since July in 2011 (when I started tracking) and because I am training for half 1000 should be easy as I need to complete at least 40 miles per week in 4 runs.

As this posts I am currently out enjoying a hopefully delicious meal at St. John’s highest ranked restaurant The Cellar, after that I will be spending the evening drinking champagne and watching the fireworks with friends and family. I sincerely hope that you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve. As for 2012? Bring it, I am ready to take you on! Smile Picture below is last New Years!

What are you or did you do to celebrate New Years Eve?

What is your biggest goal for 2012?

2011: A Recap & Happy New Year!

2011 was a big year for me in so many ways. I say it almost every year but this year was the best to me! I had a lot of life mile stones happen to me this year, it truly has been an adventure so I thought it would be fun to take a quick run down memory lane. My 2012 resolutions post is in progress and will be posted tomorrow!

I travelled a lot this year…and it was a blast!

Montreal (January)

Florida then Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, & Mexico on a cruise (April/May) aka the best trip of my life! 3 weeks of sunny bliss!

Calgary (June) I apparently have no pictures from this trip so here is my hotel room! Smile

Toronto (June)

Toronto (August)

I graduated university with 2 degrees

I bought my first car (my actual first car I did not buy – it was a hand me down).

I ran my first running race……then ran another, and then one more.

I got my first adult job.

Most importantly I started this blog … and kept it up. A goal of mine for long time in school was to blog about healthy living. I tried it once a few years ago and never kept it up because I couldn’t with school (believe me I admire those of you who do). While it is still sometimes hard to find time it is so worth it. I love writing about living a healthy live, it is a topic I am very passionate about. This blog not only allows me to do that but it allows me to connect with people like YOU who feel the same way. I read every comment and love to check out new blogs so I love hearing from you! Thank-you for continuing to stop by my little section of the blog world, I wish you the greatest year in 2012, may it bring you everything you hope for!

Happy New Year – be safe and enjoy it! xo
